How many places Italy actually has
Serie A's European allocation for 26/27 comes from three sources. The league's league-phase performance in Europe determines whether Italy claims one of the two extra Champions League berths awarded to the best-performing associations. On top of the standard four, that would create a fifth. Then there are the domestic routes: the Coppa Italia winner takes a Europa League place, and the next-best league finisher takes the Conference League play-off round.
The practical consequence is that the difference between fourth and fifth may be nothing at all, while the difference between fifth and sixth could be an entire competition. Italy's coefficient position is currently strong — four clubs still active in continental competition after the league phase — and our tracker puts the probability of a fifth Champions League slot at about 72%. If two Italian clubs reach quarter-finals, that rises above 90%.
The nine clubs and what they need
| Club | Projected points | Remaining top-six fixtures | CL probability | Any-Europe probability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inter | 84 | 4 | 96% | 99% |
| Napoli | 82 | 3 | 93% | 99% |
| Juventus | 77 | 5 | 81% | 97% |
| Milan | 72 | 4 | 62% | 93% |
| Atalanta | 70 | 5 | 54% | 91% |
| Roma | 68 | 4 | 38% | 86% |
| Bologna | 63 | 3 | 14% | 68% |
| Lazio | 61 | 4 | 9% | 57% |
| Fiorentina | 59 | 3 | 5% | 44% |
Two clubs are systematically undervalued here. Bologna own the best expected-goal difference outside the top four, driven by a high-press structure that has produced 21 shot-ending high turnovers — second in the division. And Roma, despite the nine-point deficit at the top, have conceded fewer than a goal a game since October. Both profiles historically hold up over a run-in far better than a hot-finishing mid-table side.
What each place is worth
| Competition | Participation & performance | Matchday & commercial uplift | Indicative total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Champions League | €38–55m | €8–14m | €46–69m |
| Europa League | €10–18m | €3–6m | €13–24m |
| Conference League | €4–8m | €1–3m | €5–11m |
| No European football | €0 | — | €0 |
Those bands explain behaviour you might otherwise find strange: a club sitting sixth in April fielding its strongest XI in a Coppa semi-final, or a seventh-placed side selling its best player in January to protect its sustainability calculation. Money drives the run-in, and knowing the numbers tells you which teams will chase and which will settle.
Pros and cons of chasing Europe
Why clubs push
- Champions League revenue can rebuild a squad in one window
- European football is the strongest lever in contract talks with young players
- Coefficient points protect the league's allocation, which the league office rewards
Why some quietly do not
- Thursday-night football costs mid-table squads roughly 0.15 league points per game
- Conference League economics rarely cover the additional wage and travel load
- A 20-player squad plus European commitments is a reliable path to a spring collapse
Three scenarios to plan for
Scenario A — the fifth slot lands (72%)
Fifth place becomes Champions League football. Milan, Atalanta and Roma all qualify with points totals in the high sixties, and the Europa League place drops to sixth. This is the outcome our model treats as the base case.
Scenario B — no fifth slot (28%)
Fourth becomes a cliff edge. On current projections, that puts Milan and Atalanta in a straight fight decided by two head-to-head meetings, one of which falls in the penultimate round in Bergamo.
Scenario C — a Coppa shock
If a club outside the top seven wins the Coppa Italia, the Europa League place is consumed and the Conference route shifts up a place. In 26/27 that would most plausibly benefit the eighth-placed side — historically a 60-point finisher.
Our verdict
Take Bologna's underlying numbers seriously and treat Fiorentina's position with suspicion; their finishing is running four goals hot and their schedule stiffens sharply in March. We would put the final five as Inter, Napoli, Juventus, Milan and Atalanta, with Roma the strongest alternative and Bologna the value pick if you need one club to overachieve.
